SEE LATEST NEWS!!! (next page) The county is considering approval of a monstrous urban development project on the former Sydney Phosphate Mine property. The Sydney Mine property runs from Dover Rd almost to Turkey Creek and from SR60 to Durant. Developers want to build 3,508 homes including a mix of rental apartments, condominiums, tract homes and commercial buidings.
If you think traffic is already bad on SR60, Lumsden, Dover and Durant roads, wait until these developers start adding a small city into an area that is zoned as agricultural and is supposed to have only 1 home per 5 acres.
Our schools are already overcrowded. Who will have to build and staff the new schools needed to accomodate the thousands of people that will occupy this small city? We the current residents will have to fund it with our taxes.
The former Sydney Phosphate Mine was used as a toxic waste dumping site for years. Well water cannot be used because of the contamination, so the developers are asking for the county to provide access to county water and sewer. We already have severe water restrictions. Where is the supply of water going to come from for these thousands of new homes? Existing residents will end up with even tighter water restrictions than today.
Urban development does not belong in this part of Hillsborough. The county, by law, must ensure that rural areas retain low home density and retain their rural character. At the same time, Hillsborough County is forced, by law, to consider this proposal. Existing residents have the right to expect that this area will not be paved over just to satisfy the financial goals of out-of-town land speculators. The vast majority of residents in this area don't want development on this scale. So far, the commissioners have only heard from the developers. They are telling the commissioners that their project will not impact traffic in the area, that they will "donate" some land so that the county can build the additional schools, and that the community is in favor of their project. Now is the time for the commissioners to hear the truth - the real truth, from area residents that will suffer immensely if they approve this project.
Although the opposition is growing as people learn about this project, the owners have hired powerful lawyers and public relations people to exert influence on county leadership. If you want to stop this project, you must let the county know how you feel - and soon - or it will be too late!!!
